Prof. Dimitris Plexousakis is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science, University of Crete and Head of the Information Systems Laboratory (ISL) of the Institute of Computer Science, FORTH.
His research interests are in the broader area of Data and Knowledge Management:
Dimitrios Plexousakis is the Director of the Institute of Computer Science and the Vice-President of the Board of Directors of FORTH. He is a Professor and former Chair of the Department of Computer Science, University of Crete and a Researcher at the Institute of Computer Science, FORTH in Greece. He is the Chair of the National Scientific Board on Computer and Information Sciences. As of 2012, he is the Head of the Information Systems Laboratory of ICS-FORTH. He served as Director of the Data Processing Laboratory and Head of the Information and Communication Services and Technologies Center of the University of Crete from 12/2009 to 12/2013. He received his B.Sc. degree in Computer Science from the Department of Computer Science, University of Crete in 1988 and M.Sc. and Ph.D degrees in Computer Science from the Department of Computer Science, University of Toronto in 1990 and 1996 respectively.
His research interests span the following areas: Knowledge Representation and Knowledge Base Design; formal knowledge representation models and query languages for the Semantic Web; Formal reasoning systems and applications of artificial intelligence in cognitive robotics, database systems and smart environments. He has published over 300 articles in international conferences and journals. According to Google Scholar, his work has received more than to 8,800 citations with an h-index of 45.
He has extensive experience in the scientific coordination of research projects at the national and European levels. He serves as the National Representative in ESFRI’s Strategic Group on Digital and the Chair of the National Sectoral Scientific Council on Computer and Information Sciences. He is a senior member of the Association for Computing Machinery and member Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence and the Hellenic Society for Artificial Intelligence. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the European Research Consortium on Informatics and Mathematics, chairing the Science Task Group. He also serves as the national representative in European AI Board, subgroup on the regulation of the use of AI in medical devices. He is the Coordinator of the European Digital Innovation Hub “SmartHEALTH – from Precision Medicine to Innovative e-Health Services”.
