The 17th international Passive and Active Measurement (PAM) Conference took place successfully on 31st March and 1st April at the Natural History Museum of Heraklion with approximately 70 researchers and experienced professionals from around the world as well as University of Crete students. The two main organizers were Xenofontas Dimitropoulos, Assistant Professor, University of Crete’s Department of Computer Science and head of FORTH’s INternet Security, Privacy, and Intelligence REsearch Group (INSPIRE Group) and Dr. Thomas Karagiannis, Senior Researcher at Microsoft Research in Cambridge. Prof. Dimitropoulos commenced PAM 2016 stressing the importance of both the scientific field and also the attendance of so many distinguished researchers in FORTH and at the city of Heraklion. The main guest and speaker was Prof. Bernhard Plattner from ETH Zurich (ETH). The conference was held in Greece for the first time.
Network measurement is one of the fields, which has been at the center of interest of the academic and business community, especially in the last 20 years, due to the spread of the Internet in all aspects of daily life. From internet safety, efficiency and reliability, to telecommunications, IoT (Internet of Things) and databases, network measurement attempts to approach issues and challenges related to consumers, users, businesses, international organizations and of course some of the most powerful economies of the world. Thus, the Conference’s discussions and presentations included important conclusions of the research activity and practical experience of experts from very important institutions from around the world, such as: University of California Berkeley, Princeton University, Akamai, Telefonica Research, LinkedIn, International Computer Science Institute (ICSI), University of Crete / FORTH (Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas), Technical University of Munich, University of California San Diego, University of Melbourne etc.
The main sponsor of PAM 2016 was Microsoft Research, UK. For more information please visit INSPIRE Group at INSPIRE Group: http://www.inspire.edu.gr/.
