The Information Systems Laboratory of the Institute of Computer Science of FORTH, participate in the recently launched European project PULSE-ART. PULSE-ART aims to demonstrate how the use of art in education can become a key driver for cultural development in communities of all of Europe.
The inaugural event took place on November 28th at Casa Golferichs Civic Center, in the city of Barcelona. The project seeks to identify gaps and barriers in educational systems that hinder the integration of art as a tool to promote cultural awareness, to test new methodologies in collaboration with cultural and creative industries, and to create action plans and national action and policy recommendations based on concrete evidence on the impact of art in education. FORTH's role concerns the design and creation of an Observatory of Arts in Education for fostering Cultural Awareness and Expression (CAE), which will aslo include a self-reflection tool. In addition, FORTH is responsible for evaluating the results and the impact of PULSE-ART project. FORTH also will implement the services for searching and accessing the observatory's data.

The Information Systems Laboratory of the Institute of Computer Science of FORTH participate in the European Project PULSE-ART, Promoting Understanding and Lifelong learning Successful Education through the Arts and culture.
The PULSE-ART project, coordinated from Barcelona, Spain, will develop an educational platform and artistic education workshops in different disciplines to promote European cultural awareness. This project, coordinated by Science For Change (SFC) and co-coordinated by the Scientific Culture Unit of ISGlobal, aims to demonstrate how the use of art in education can become a key driver for cultural development in communities of all of Europe. The inaugural event took place on November 28th at Casa Golferichs Civic Center, located in the heart of the city of Barcelona. It brought together cultural managers, artists, researchers, educators and other key actors in a collaborative environment designed to participate in dynamic workshops and explore innovative ecosystems, methodologies and practices to integrate art in education in the framework of the PULSE-ART project.

A European call for cultural action “At a time when Europe and the world are facing challenges related to the loss of cultural components due to the adoption of rigid identities, PULSE-ART project responds to an urgent need: to revitalize the values of mutual respect and appreciation for cultural diversity based on and giving value to the work of the cultural industry,” explains Isidora Fernández, coordinator of PULSE-ART and art and science specialist at SFC.
This innovative project seeks to identify gaps and barriers in educational systems to integrate art as a tool to promote cultural awareness, test new methodologies in seven case studies in Europe and Morocco, in collaboration with cultural and creative industries, and create action plans, national action and policy recommendations based on concrete evidence on the impact of art in education.
Art as a Catalyst for Change The project is supported by an international consortium that includes research centers, universities, foundations, a small and medium-sized company and a museum, who contribute their complementary knowledge and skills to ensure a lasting impact. “Together we will work to generate palpable evidence, replicable tools and products, and educational materials, promoting the sustainability of the use of art in education,” says Rosa Arias, CEO of SFC and part of the PULSE-ART coordination team. In addition, the Observatory of Arts in Education for Cultural Awareness and Expression will be created, which will integrate a set of tools for the professional development of educational training through art. These tools will be validated through 7 case studies in different countries using different artistic techniques. For example, in the Spanish pilot, scientific illustration and drawing will be worked on through the coordination of the National Museum of Natural Sciences (MNCN-CSIC) of Madrid, in collaboration with Illustraciencia, an entity specializing in this discipline. Other artistic disciplines will also be worked on, such as dance (Latvia), game jams (Malta), video games (France), performing arts (Netherlands), visual arts and technology (Greece) and traditional music (Morocco)”, concludes Raül Toran, head of the Science Culture Unit (UCC+i) at ISGlobal and part of the PULSE-ART team.
The role of FORTH The scientific responsible for FORTH is Dr. Yannis Tzitzikas, professor in the Department of Computer Science of the University of Crete and Affiliated Researcher at FORTH, while the research director and coordinator is Dr. Michalis Mountantonakis, a postdoctoral researcher at FORTH and an EDIP member of the Department of Computer Science of the University of Crete. FORTH's role concerns the design and creation of an Observatory of Arts in Education for fostering Cultural Awareness and Expression (CAE), which will also include a self-reflection tool. In addition, FORTH is responsible for evaluating the results and the impact of PULSE-ART project. FORTH will also implement the services for searching and accessing the observatory's data.
