For the eighth consecutive year, Alexandros Stamatakis, the ERA Chair at FORTH-Institute of Computer Science specializing in Computational Biodiversity, has earned a coveted position on the prestigious "Highly Cited Researchers" list by Clarivate. This distinction concerns scientists who are ranked in the highest 1% of their scientific field, based on the impact of their work as manifested by objective criteria, such as the number of references to their publications and the impact factor. Alexandros Stamatakis has earned this recognition through the prolific production of highly cited papers spanning an impressive 11-year period from January 2012 to December 2022.
Alexandros Stamatakis is a Professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and a researcher at the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies.
His research is focused on the creation of scalable methods and software designed for the analysis of molecular sequence data. Stamatakis's publications have significantly advanced the field of evolutionary biology, encompassing the development of software for evolutionary tree inference, the assessment and utilization of emerging parallel computing architectures, investigations into the evolution of cancer cells, and the statistical classification of bacteria.
Since 2022, Alexandros Stamatakis has held the ERA Chair FORTH-Institute of Computer Science. This appointment represents one of the seven chairs bestowed upon Greece by the European Union through the highly selective WIDENING – ERA Chairs program. The Computational Biodiversity team is part of the Computational Biomedicine Laboratory of ICS FORTH and collaborates closely with Biodiversity Research Centers, such as the Hellenic Marine Research Center and the Natural History Museum of Crete.
