Mobile robotic platform Xenios, an improvement over older robotic platforms Talos and Lefkos, will be the base for the development of a new generation of mobile robots intended to operate in museums and exhibition areas. Compared to Talos and Lefkos, Xenios improves them by combining all their desirable characteristics with a set of new features, most of them related to ensuring its operation in difficult/uncontrolled conditions.
Το ρομποτικό σύστημα Νηρηΐς είναι μία νέα βιομιμητική ρομποτική πλατφόρμα, που αποσκοπεί στην πρόσβαση σε δύσκολα και ανώμαλα εδάφη. Η μορφολογία και η στρατηγική κίνησής της είναι εμπνευσμένες από τα αντίστοιχα χαρακτηριστικά των πολύχαιτων δακτυλιοσκωλήκων, μιας οικογένειας θαλάσσιων ασπόνδυλων οργανισμών που ζουν και κινούνται σε περιβάλλοντα όπου η κίνηση είναι μία σημαντική πρόκληση, όπως στο νερό της θάλασσας, στη λάσπη του βυθού και στην άμμο της ακρογιαλιάς. Το ρομποτικό σύστημα συνδυάζει κυματοειδείς μεταβολές του σχήματος του αρθρωτού σώματός του με κινήσεις των πλευρικών του παραποδίων, γιά να κινηθεί σε στερεό ή μη υπόστρωμα (άμμο, λάσπη, χαλίκια, κλπ.). Τα καινοτόμα χαρακτηριστικά του ρομποτικού συστήματος Νηρηΐς επιτρέπουν τη διερεύνηση προβλημάτων κίνησης που άπτονται σημαντικών εφαρμογών, όπως της υποβοήθησης διαδικασιών έρευνας και διάσωσης, ενδοσκοπικών χειρουργικών επεμβάσεων, ακόμα και της εξερεύνησης άλλων πλανητών.
The robotic platform PELEAS was demonstrated during the 70th Thessaloniki International Trade Fair. Peleas is differential drive robotic platform, designed and constructed exclusively in the Computer Vision and Robotics Laboratory of FORTH. Both electronic and mechanical parts, as well as the controlling software, are built from scratch and aimed at suiting the research interests of the lab better than the commercial platforms, especially multi-robot cooperation. The platform it is equipped with a ball handling actuator and meets the RoboCup international robotic soccer competition regulations, where autonomous robotic team behaviours are studied and evaluated.
Robot Lefkos welcomed the president of the European commission, Mr. Jose Manuel Barroso to the premises of the exhibition "technologia sti steria kai sti thalassa" that took place at Zappeion exhibition hall, Athens 18-20 April, 2005. The exhibition was organized by the Greek ministry of development (general secretariat for research and technology and special secretariat for competitiveness) as part of their program of activities "year of competitiveness 2005" and contained exhibits from various Greek research and technology centers and institutes.
The robotic tour-guide Lefkos was demonstrated to the public and to people form commerce and industry during the 69th Thessaloniki International Trade Fair (11-19 September 2004). During the first day of the event (September 11th 2004), ρobot Lefkos welcomed and guided the Greek prime-minister Mr. Kostas Karamanlis and the Greek minister of development Mr Dimitris Sioufas to premises and stands within the kiosk of the Greek ministry of development. During the whole duration of the fair the robotic tour-guide operated continuously, offering a large number of guided tours to people of all ages.
TOURBOT was installed and operated for a longer period of time (Oct. 2001-Feb. 2002) at the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum (HNF) in Paderborn, Germany.This was in the framework of the special exhibition Computer.Gehirn (Computer.Brain) with a focus on the comparison of the capabilities of computers/robots and human beings.
Exhibition: ''Byzantium through the eyes of a robot.'' The exhibition area comprised about 330 square meters. During the trial the robot operated 40 hours, covering a distance of 5.3 kilometers. The number of web users was small in this trial, due to the following fact. Since the first day of the trial at the Byzantine and Christian Museum, a large number of (on-site) visitors were coming to the exhibition. This forced the TOURBOT team to the decision to devote significantly more time of the system to on-site visitors as opposed to web visitors.
Exhibition: "Part of the permanent exhibition, highlighting scientific achievements that were awarded the Nobel Prize." The exhibition area in which the robot moved comprised about 200 square meters. The system operated about 60 hours, covering a distance of 10 km. Approximately 1900 web visitors had a look around the museum via the robot.
The exhibition area comprised 2000 square meters. During the trial the robot Lefkos operated approximately 60 hours covering a distance of 14 kilometers. More than 1200 web users observed the exhibition through TOURBOT.
