Prof Manolis Tsiknakis (h-index: 42), is a Professor of Biomedical Informatics and eHealth at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Hellenic Mediterranean University and an affiliated researcher at the Computational Biomedicine Laboratory of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH). He has been the scientific coordinator or the technical leader of several large, EU funded, collaborative projects. Currently he is coordinating the ProCAncer-I project (https://www.procancer-i.eu/) an ambitious effort focused on developing an AI Platform integrating imaging data and models, supporting precision care through prostate cancer’s continuum. He has regularly acted as an evaluator of research proposals for the EU, and other European funding agencies as well as for the Russian Science Foundation and the General Secretariat for Research and Innovation, Greece. He was an eEurope/eHealth award winner in 2003 and the recipient of FORTH’s award for most innovative applied research in 2004. He is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics and an Editorial Board member of the European Biomedical Informatics Journal. He is the author of over 300 publications. His main areas of expertise include biomedical informatics and engineering, approaches for semantic health data integration and interoperability of health information systems; affective computing and behavioural modelling; and pervasive eHealth and mHealth services.

The paper entitled “Eugenia Mylona, Dimitris Zaridis, Nikolaos Tachos, Dimitrios Fotiadis, Kostas Marias and Manolis Tsiknakis, A Deep Learning-based Cropping Technique to Improve Segmentation of Prostate’s Peripheral Zone” received the best student paper award at the IEEE Bioinformatics and Bioengineering 2021 Conference. The paper entitled “Donor’s support tool: Enabling informed secondary use of patient’s biomaterial and personal data” (doi: 10.1016/j.ijmedinf.2016.10.019 ) has been selected for inclusion, as one of the best articles from the literature, in the IMIA Yearbook of Medical Informatics published in 2017. The paper "A. Kouroubali, D. Vourvahakis, M. Tsiknakis: Innovative Practices in the Emergency Medical Services in Crete," received the best paper award at the iSHMIR 05 Conference, Sept 2005. (www.seerc.info/ishimr2005/index.html). Dr Tsiknakis received the 2004 FORTH’s award for the most innovative applied research. This is an annual award given by FORTH to innovative research and technological achievements by its researchers in the domains of basic and applied research. The Regional Health Information Network of Crete "HYGEIAnet" was selected a finalist (among more than 180 contenders) at the ministerial conference and exhibition eHealth 2003, that took place in Brussels on May 2003 and received an honourable mention (the second prizein the Regional Health Information networks category). The Poster "ECG in Your Hands: A Multi-Vendor ECG Viewer for Personal Digital Assistants" by F. Chiarugi, M. Spanakis, PJ. Lees, C. Chronaki, M. Tsiknakis and SC Orphanoudakis received the best poster awardat the Computers in Cardiology 2003 (CiC 2003) Conference, Sept 2003.
