Sensing solutions creating situational awareness have been around in the urban environment for decades. With the internet of things (ΙοΤ) sensors and actuators, interconnected, in centralized(?) platforms, allowed for even more applications to evolve, diffusing intelligence in space, making cities “smarter”. Recently, within Industry 4.0, the notion of Digital Twinning of assets and processes moved the bar higher in the concept of digitalization. Within this context, echoing Society 5.0 we envision Cities 5.0, where citizens are active participants of the design of technological solutions in the urban space, aiming to provide solutions addressing local problems in an inclusive fashion, towards more adoptable and thus sustainable solutions. My talk highlights work we have been recently doing starting from characterizing data freshness and distributing services in the IoT context, takes us into the domain of Digital Twins, and closes with our ongoing and future interdisciplinary work towards co-creating solutions and …fun in the public space.
Vangelis Angelakis has been with UoC-CSD and FORTH-ICS since 1996 and 2000 respectively; he received a PhD degree in Computer Science in 2008, supervised by professor Traganitis. In 2009 he taught at CSD, and since 2009 he has been with the Department of Science and Technology (ITN), in Linköping University (LiU), in Norrköping, Sweden. In 2015, he received his Habilitation (Docent) degree and he is currently a Professor with ITN, LiU. He has co-authored over 80 papers in international journals and peer-reviewed conferences, two of which have won best paper awards. His research interests, departing from the field of communication systems and their application in the IoT, lie in the area of inclusive and sustainable smart cities solutions design, implementation, and performance evaluation. He has held multiple guest posts both in the industry and academia, primarily through EU funded projects, in the US, EU, UK, and China. He coordinated and was a Principal Investigator for LiU in a host of EU projects since FP7, and has been with the OPTICWISE COST Action Management Committee. Currently he is LiU PI for two Horizon Europe projects. He served as an Associate Editor (AE) for the IEEE/KICS Journal of communications and Networks and for the Elsevier Internet of Things, and he is currently AE for the IET Smart Cities journal.
