The Age of Information (AoI) is a novel elegant metric introduced in the early 2010s to improve timeliness of the information received over a network and prediction quality. Value of Information (VoIU), more recently introduced similarly quantifies the benefit of obtaining sensory updates over a network. This brief tutorial treats the fundamentals of their theory and applications, while early developments in the field including designs and benefits are discussed. We indicate that AoI is not limited to networking and the initial results can be generalized into several directions, such as sampling theory, scheduling and even learning.
Vangelis is an associate professor with the department of Science and Technology (ITN) at Linköping University (LiU) in Sweden. He holds a PhD from the department of Computer Science of the University of Crete, Greece and in 2015 he received his Docent from ITN-LiU. Vangelis coordinated the EU FP7 MSCA IAPP project SOrBet, and was principal investigator for LiU in the EU FP7 ICT project RERUM and had been in the OPTICWISE COST Action management committee; currently he is the LiU PI for the EU Horizon 2020 MSCA ITN WiVi-2020 project, supervising three of its PhD students. His research interests revolve around design of telecommunication systems and network optimization with a focus on the IoT and Smart City applications. He has held multiple visiting posts both in the industry and academia, in the US, EU, and China. Vangelis has more than 70 papers in international journals and peer-reviewed conferences. He currently serves as an associate editor of the IEEE/KICS journal of communications and networks (JCN) and has a long history of serving as member of the organizing committees and technical program committees in a wide range of international conferences and workshops.
