Pattern Insight was started in 2006 as an effort to commercialize the research of its founders at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The initial technology around large scale systems data mining that the founders developed at the University became the basis of Pattern Insight. I will describe the challenges and lessons in turning pure academic research into an established software company with customers some the biggest technology companies in the world, 100% annual growth and millions of dollars in revenue. Furthermore, I will present the current state of the search and analysis technology for IT data that Pattern Insight has developed along with some open problems in both the technology and the market it operates.
