GNM-DMS-Version 2.0 Project focuses on the creation of a new version of the Documents Management System (DMS) of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum. Scope of the project covers migration paths which should be taken in order to bring DMS 1.0 software under a new technical platform with the following characteristics: a) Significant reduction of current DMS administration and maintenance costs b) Usage of more ergonomic tools in order to enhance, augment and simplify the current DMS c) Support of workflow adaptations and functionality extensions based on current DMS usage experience. A new technical platform is required due to the high maintenance costs introduced by the use of an expensive database vendor and its associate development platforms. Furthermore over the past ten years new innovative technologies and platforms have emerged and research in the Museum area has brought new standards like LIDO also opening new ways of thinking for documentation and information management in museums. All these aspects are considered in this project and incorporated into the new GNM-DMS Version 2 software.
