"The improvement in competitiveness of the Greek tourism industry, especially that of small - medium enterprises, it depends to a large degree on the modernization of the information network through which the provision of tourism services to the public is realized. The project Electronic Commerce - Provision of Tourism Services over Internet aims at developing an e-commerce - based integrated system for Greek enterprises offering services in the domain of tourism. The goal is to meet the requirements of a global tourism market as these are shaped by the technological innovations in the area of information systems, electronic commerce and the Internet. Three main lines of action are identified for the design of the framework for the integrated system for the provision of tourism services: the adoption of modern business practices, the employment of reliable communication infrastructure, and the transfer of knowledge from research in information systems. The foreseen results of this effort are expected to affect the business model of the entire chain of work in the tourism-based economy and create added-value services and products reachable to all parties (users/consumers, providers of services and products, tourism agencies)."
