[ICS-2312] Call for expression of interest for one (1) BSc holder in Computer Science or Computer Engineering
We seek one experienced member for our team, with a BSc degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering. The candidate will participate in the R&D activities of FORTH in the context of the project “Craft Understanding, Education, Training, and Preservation for Posterity and Prosperity” (Craeft), funded under Horizon EUROPE, HORIZON-CL2-2021-HERITAGE-01 (RIA). Craeft is coordinated by FORTH-ICS. The project aims to deepen our understanding of making activities that include care, judgement, and dexterity standing on Anthropology, Knowledge Representation, Cognitive Science, Art History, Advanced Digitisation, Audiovisual & Haptic Immersivity, and Computational Intelligence to cover the multifaceted expression of crafts as living and developing heritage, as a sustainable source of income, and as the expression of the mind through imagery, technology, and sedimented knowledge. A generative approach will prove sufficiency for digital conservation, reenactable preservation, and scaling of approach for the full range of materials and techniques. Craeft will catalyse craft education and training with intuitive digital aids, telecommunications, craft-specific simulators, advanced immersivity, and high-end digitisation, to widen access, economise learning, increase exercisability, and relax remoteness constraints in craft learning. The integration of haptics intelligence haptics in digital design connects tacit knowledge in computer-aided craft-specific design tools. Workflow simulation will support experimental archaeology for the recovery of lost techniques. The analytic workflow analysis leads to digital fabrication opportunities for menial tasks, material savings and reuse, and reduction of energy consumption. Digital dimensions attached to individual works of craft will enable certification and attachment of digital content, but also enable reputation and community building, supported by a Community Portal for professionals and the public that connects to the New Media, hosts heterogeneous craft portfolios, and registers practitioner credentials. The efficacy of the approach will be piloted in eight representative craft instances with the cross-cutting objectives of Craft Education & Training, Design, Valorisation, and Community services across the range of materials.

[ICS-2301] Call for expression of interest for one (1) position for an R&D Engineer with a degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering
We seek one (1) recent graduate Research & Development Engineer with a degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering for our team. The candidate will contribute to the R&D activities of FORTH in the context of the EC-funded project HIGHER, particularly in (i) development of low-level control firmware and system software, and (ii) validation and evaluation of use cases. The HIGHER project follows the Open Compute Project (OCP) Server family of standards to build processor modules for computation and acceleration, alongside a system security/control module. The project aims to build modular rack-scale systems, running with fully-featured operating systems and runtimes, and incorporating reusable standards-based infrastructure that encompasses hardware, low-level firmware, and systems software, while ensuring trustworthy functionality for managing, securing, and controlling servers. The project's open-source hardware and software outcomes will enhance European Digital Autonomy and facilitate wide adoption. Furthermore, the project will assemble representative software stacks supporting a range of use cases, including accelerated data processing and analysis for converged Cloud and HPC platforms, Infrastructure-as-a-Service with standardized management and monitoring, Platform-as-a-Service facilitating large-scale data processing for ML inference and data analytics, and memory pool management at the server rack level, with access control safeguards aligned with maturing CXL standards.

We seek one experienced software engineer holding a MSc in Computer Science and Informatics with background in European and/or National ICT RTD projects. The candidate will participate in the R&D activities of FORTH-ICS in the context of the project SemantyFish (Funded by OSCARS 1st Open Call for Open Science Projects and Services). The candidate will work with the design and implementation of programmatic APIs and services for accessing the semantic web knowledge bases of SemantyFish.SemantyFish aims to enhance the visibility, interoperability, and exploitability of FishBase by transforming it into a semantic web knowledge base. By leveraging semantic web technologies, the project will enable seamless data exchange, complex queries, and integration with global research infrastructures, advancing its role in open science and interdisciplinary research. SemantyFish is an open science project funded under the OSCARS 1st Open Call for Open Science Projects and Services. SemantyFish aims to transform FishBase into a semantic web knowledge base using cutting-edge semantic web technologies. By structuring data with standard vocabularies and ontologies, the project will enhance data interoperability, making FishBase more discoverable and accessible for both humans and machines. This shift will allow seamless data exchange across domains and enable more complex and meaningful data queries. In addition, it will enable richer, more meaningful and complex data queries and analysis by relying on semantic relationships between entities. As a semantic web knowledge base, its contents can be queried using SPARQL. Furthermore, a dedicated API will be implemented as a versatile gateway for accessing the wealth of resources of the knowledge base in different formats and standards. Designed with REST principles, it will offer simplicity, scalability and interoperability, making it the ideal interface for developers, scientists and researchers.

The candidate will participate in the R&D activities of FORTH in the context of the project: VeriFish: The sustainability indicator framework to communicate responsible aquafood production and consumption patterns, funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe Programme (HORIZON-MISS-2023-OCEAN-01-10), Grant Agreement ID: 101156426”.VeriFish project aims to deliver an indicator framework to facilitate understanding of the complexity that lays behind the definition of sustainable seafood, to enhance communication about the importance of production and consumption of sustainable seafood and aquaculture. Despite its potential advantages in terms of climate impact, sustainability, and nutrition, seafood is frequently disregarded or lumped together with meat. The potential benefits of seafood are often overlooked, particularly in the transition towards a sustainable, equitable and balanced protein system. Seafood consumption in Europe is low compared to meat products, and locally produced seafood often cannot compete with imported products because consumers do not know about or value local seafood. To enable healthy and sustainable choices, consumers need information about sustainability and nutrient values as well as provenance and potential health risks and benefits. In this context, VeriFish will work on the creation of a prototype web application, a series of media products and recommendations for communicating sustainability indicators to various stakeholders including guidelines for retail and the hospitality sectors. The goal is to provide an accessible and dynamic framework for the improvement of communication and understanding of sustainable seafood production and consumption.

With a particular focus on archaeology, ATRIUM will expand services such as optical character recognition (OCR), handwritten text recognition (HTR) and automatic speech recognition (ASR).

The candidate will participate in the R&D activities of FORTH in the context of the EuroHPC JU-funded project NET4EXA. The NET4EXA project aims to create an advanced interconnect, which will scale to hundreds of thousands of computing nodes and will support modern HPC systems that are designed for massive AI tasks, such as the training of Large Language Models. The interconnect forms the backbone of such systems, and their overall performance is intimately tied to the scalability of the network and its tight coupling with the high-end compute elements.
