[ICS-2412] Call for expression of interest for two (2) systems software engineers, with MSc degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering
We seek two (2) systems software engineers, with a MSc degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering. The candidates will contribute to the R&D activities of FORTH, in the context of the EuroHPC-funded project SPACE, in either a full-time (preferred) or part-time capacity. The SPACE Centre-of-Excellence project aims to foster the reuse and sharing of algorithms and software components in the Astrophysics and Cosmology (A&C) application domain, where High Performance Computing (HPC)-based numerical simulations are outstanding instruments for scientific discovery. SPACE aims to extensively re-engineer the target codes to engage with new computational solutions suitable for exascale and post-exascale computing systems, and to adopt innovative programming paradigms, software solutions, and libraries. The SPACE consortium will pursue this goal through co-design activities that bring together scientists, code developers, HPC experts, HW manufacturers and SW developers, advancing lighthouse exascale A&C applications, codes, services and know-how promoting the use of upcoming exascale and post-exascale computing capabilities. In addition, SPACE will address the high-performance data analysis of the data torrent produced by exascale A&C simulation applications, also with machine-learning and visualization tools. The deployment of applications running on different platforms will be facilitated by federating capabilities focusing on code repositories and data sharing, and integrating European astrophysical communities around exascale computing by adopting software and data standards and interoperability protocols.

[ICS-2411] Call for expression of interest for one (1) position for student enrolled to a University MSc Program
We seek one (1) student enrolled to a University MSc Program in Computer Science or Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering. The candidate will contribute to the R&D activities of FORTH in the context of the EC-funded project HIGHER, particularly in the implementation, validation, and evaluation of use cases. The HIGHER project follows the Open Compute Project (OCP) Server family of standards to build processor modules for computation and acceleration, alongside a system security/control module. The project aims to build modular rack-scale systems, running with fully-featured operating systems and runtimes, and incorporating reusable standards-based infrastructure that encompasses hardware, low-level firmware, and systems software, while ensuring trustworthy functionality for managing, securing, and controlling servers. The project's open-source hardware and software outcomes will enhance European Digital Autonomy and facilitate wide adoption. Furthermore, the project will assemble representative software stacks supporting a range of use cases, including accelerated data processing and analysis for converged Cloud and HPC platforms, Infrastructure-as-a- Service with standardized management and monitoring, Platform-as-a-Service facilitating large-scale data processing for ML inference and data analytics, and memory pool management at the server rack level, with access control safeguards aligned with maturing CXL standards.

The candidate will work with the conceptual modelling and design and implementation of ontologies for the SemantyFish project.SemantyFish aims to enhance the visibility, interoperability, and exploitability of FishBase by transforming it into a semantic web knowledge base. By leveraging semantic web technologies, the project will enable seamless data exchange, complex queries, and integration with global research infrastructures, advancing its role in open science and interdisciplinary research. SemantyFish is an open science project funded under the OSCARS 1st Open Call for Open Science Projects and Services. SemantyFish aims to transform FishBase into a semantic web knowledge base using cutting-edge semantic web technologies. By structuring data with standard vocabularies and ontologies, the project will enhance data interoperability, making FishBase more discoverable and accessible for both humans and machines. This shift will allow seamless data exchange across domains and enable more complex and meaningful data queries. In addition, it will enable richer, more meaningful and complex data queries and analysis by relying on semantic relationships between entities. As a semantic web knowledge base, its contents can be queried using SPARQL. Furthermore, a dedicated API will be implemented as a versatile gateway for accessing the wealth of resources of the knowledge base in different formats and standards. Designed with REST principles, it will offer simplicity, scalability and interoperability, making it the ideal interface for developers, scientists and researchers.

The candidate will participate in the R&D activities of FORTH in the context of the project: VeriFish: The sustainability indicator framework to communicate responsible aquafood production and consumption patterns, funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe Programme (HORIZON-MISS-2023-OCEAN-01-10), Grant Agreement ID: 101156426”.VeriFish project aims to deliver an indicator framework to facilitate understanding of the complexity that lays behind the definition of sustainable seafood, to enhance communication about the importance of production and consumption of sustainable seafood and aquaculture. Despite its potential advantages in terms of climate impact, sustainability, and nutrition, seafood is frequently disregarded or lumped together with meat. The potential benefits of seafood are often overlooked, particularly in the transition towards a sustainable, equitable and balanced protein system. Seafood consumption in Europe is low compared to meat products, and locally produced seafood often cannot compete with imported products because consumers do not know about or value local seafood. To enable healthy and sustainable choices, consumers need information about sustainability and nutrient values as well as provenance and potential health risks and benefits. In this context, VeriFish will work on the creation of a prototype web application, a series of media products and recommendations for communicating sustainability indicators to various stakeholders including guidelines for retail and the hospitality sectors. The goal is to provide an accessible and dynamic framework for the improvement of communication and understanding of sustainable seafood production and consumption.

This involves developing solutions for metadata quality assessment, curation, and enrichment, as well as creating feedback loops between catalogs and data providers. With a particular focus on archaeology, ATRIUM will expand services such as optical character recognition (OCR), handwritten text recognition (HTR) and automatic speech recognition (ASR).
